What is the significance of "pre 1964 nickels"?

The silver content

On nickels (and correct me if I'm wrong) I believe the only years with silver in them are 1942-1945. They are referred to as "war nickels" because they were minted during wwII and contain 35% silver. Pre 64 dimes and quarters are 90% silver though.

I just save everything older than 64, to be on the safe side.

Wow Im an idiot.... i was thinking nickels had the same years as dimes and halfs... All well i still got a nice buffalo and 2 mint "s" coins that i'm keeping, off to the bank

Hell....A buffalo from a 100 dollar box would be a win for me....I too keep all pre 1960 Nickels....just because....there really isnt any significance to it. Im just a coin collector....just as I keep all my wheats...they might be the next IH pennies, where you cant get one for less then 50c a piece

I have some very old pre-1900 mason jars I keep all my wheats and pre-1960 nickels in.

The Jefferson 5c key date for the series is the 1950-D, and almost any early-dated D or S buffalo nickel can be a key date.

But as for silver nickels, Dr. Tones is correct, silver nickels were only made between 1942-45. In fact, there are 2 nickel types for 1942: nickel and silver. Silver war nickels are differentiated by the large mint mark over Monticello on the reverse.

I meant the nickel content.

correct the only nickels with silver are war nickels
