I just started this hobby today. I spent about 2 hours with Ron The Gold Digger yesterday and he set me up with a Garrett AT Pro and gave me a full "how to" lesson on metal detecting. I just want to say thanks to Ron for taking the time to show a newbie the ropes. I got out today for about 2 hours at a local park, just expecting to get some time on the unit. I did find a few bottle caps, some pull tabs and a few pieces of junk. What I did find that I could use some help with is a black rock that sent my detector off the charts. I have no idea what it is, but this is my first day....

I will try to post a picture, if it works the rock in the picture looks brown, but it's really black. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Matt

It is probably slag. There is a What is it? forum if you scroll down a bit questions are answered much faster there. Welcome and good lock hunting and posting.

I agree with relic lover - slag or maybe a "coal clinker". Back when people used coal to heat their houses they had to clean the clinkers out of the furnace and the were typically just thrown out on the ground. A clinker is just the non-burnable impurities from the coal melted together. They will set off detectors like crazy. They are often small, black lumps like yours.
