My father always talked about getting a metal detector but was a miserly guy and a workaholic. He'd never spend the money nor take time to get out and enjoy "leisure time". About 4-5 years ago I finally convinced him to spend a few bucks and buy himself one. Unfortunately, his health went downhill shortly after and he never used it. We lost him 2 years ago. I finally broke out his detector and today was the first day to take it out. My wife, our daughter and I went to an old home site we have nearby and had a great evening getting dirty. What we found was mostly nails and junk but the old axehead is pretty neat. Not a big deal to most, I'm sure, but to us it was a terrific first day out on our new hobby. We're hooked! No idea how old the axehead is as its a very common style that has been in use for many, many years. Thing is, I know for a fact it has been underground for at least 40 years since I've known the property that long. So, to have my wife and daughter dig it up with me and Dad today was an awesome memory made.

The fun family time and memories are more valuable than anything you can dig up. Sorry about your dad. At least you and your family can enjoy the best hobby ever with something that was his. Best of luck and happy hunting!

great start for you and your family, as you know they are treasures of your heart. good luck on all your hunts

Thanks guys. It has us planning for much more. We are fortunate in that we have many places to hit right here near home.

It would tickle me to make that find, especially with a detector from my Dad ! Sorry about your Dad, I lost mine many years ago, I kinda know how you feel. It sounds like you and your family had a great time. Happy Hunting

Congratulations. Sorry about the loss of your father. My father is 80 and doesn't get around as well as he did a decade ago, so, I'd never get him out to go detecting. I di enjoy seeing him when I get the time, though. I hope you have many fond memories to cherish.
