White's DFX and my old BH Prospector DX as a backup!
My detecting partner, TXBLUZMAN, and I were out swinging away today. I found an old house in downtown San Antonio that dates somewhere around 1920. We both found a good bit of clad, but the big, low powerlines were really giving the machines too much trouble to find the deep stuff. I did find these two rings. One is a little girl's sterling silver. It has the name "Mikila" on the outside. The other is a mans band and the part with Xs spins freely around the band. It has no marks, but has the same VDI (17 on the DFX) as my wife's platinum rings. Anyone know how to test for platinum?

Have the spin ring tested..unless it was custom made, they usually are sterling silver.. but test it to be sure.. nice finds..

WTG. First Day with a new detector and you did great. Nice Rings

Great finds...I would guess the spinning ring is Silver. I've never seen that style ring in platinum but for your sake I hope I'm wrong.

I love my DFX...I recently purchased the Sunray in-line probe for it which makes retrieving coins much easier and safer. I have not scratched a find since getting the probe not that I was scratching too many before but when the ground is extra hard I do get over zealous at times.

Good luck with the DFX.

Fantastic hunt with the new DFX congrats, way to break that machine in.

I find your vdi readings to seem a little unusual... I am surprised the small child's silver ring came up a 17 ??? Guess it hid in the nickel range...maybe close to same size...Usually the small silver rings come up in the area of 72-81.... The other ring if gold/platinum...yes a reading of 17..18...seems possible but I believe platinum comes in lower... I had one come up at 14...but heard for platinum not uncommon for even lower readings...stop at a jeweler..tell him the truth how you found them and a good jeweler will help you..nice finds! :)

The large spinner ring was actually the one that came up as a 17. I haven't made it to the jeweler yet, but looking on the web, I now think that it's Stainless Steel. I've found many just like it online.

Thanks for all of the encouragement guys. I'm looking forward to this weekend when a group of us Texans will be on the hunt for Battle of Medina relics (see TX Forum)!

Either way..gold..silver..even stainless steel...they are very different looking and nice finds! :)

If there aren't any markings inside that say PL or PLAT, then its not platinum..as mentioned, probably silver or plated.
