First few yard sales were a bust. Finally found some jewelry at one and scored a small sterling ring for $1. Went to a few more with nothing and the stumbled upon a bizarre sale. An old collector had passed on and the family was selling off her stuff. Most of it was $250-$5000 price range, I was about to leave and spotted the knife pictured below for $20. The girl running the show said that the handle was sterling and had been appraised at about $25. I bought it in shock at the appraisal. the handle is 5 inches long and solid, the blade is 9 inches. I did some more research and its 1890s Towle Sterling (marked with the Towle mark and sterling). How much you think it could be worth? I figured atleast $100 due to a 2-3 ounce silver handle.

what kind of pics do you need to see to believe it. I know the blade has its tang encased in the handle but the handle seems to be one solid piece and that it what is marked

Here the scrap buyer that everyone sells too, has a formula that he uses for knives, because the blade and tang most of the time are not sterling. Nice find and good luck...............Scott.

Ya its definatly just the handle that is sterling. Would love to know that formula if you could find it out

99 to 1 that handle is hollowware meaning there is filler in that handle an it isn't solid sterling the whole way thru.... it is very thin piece of sterling wrapped around a filler type material

I agree with creeper71, it's sterling wrapped around either a plaster or resin type material. It's an older piece so there is probably between 1/3 & 1/2 an ounce of sterling.

I searched through a bunch of patterns this morning and found my Knife on replacements.com, it is the Paul Revere pattern and the carving knife set goes for $300 and doesnt state holloware like some of the other products so I figure split the 3 piece sets price and I should get $100 or so

Replacement prices are way over priced... Ebay s more current.. make sure you use completed as your guide an anything that is in green... I am telling you that handle ISN'T SOILD WHOLE WAY THRU.... I seen enough to know...

Unless you get lucky, MOST of the time you are not going to get close to replacement.com prices on ebay. I personally shoot for 40-60% of their prices and end up selling most of my items. I have personally never seen a solid sterling silver knife handle, but thats not saying much so hopefully your is.
