Hi all,

Well, it's pretty toasty, but I found my first colonial copper. It's a New Jersey, I'm pretty excited about it! Took me a while to find, till my pinpointer beeped on the edge of the hole about 5 inches down. It was standing on end. I was wondering if any of you could tell by the few details remaining what variety it could be? I found it in Westmoreland County, PA.

Thanks for looking!

Don will love your New jersey penny! I'll stand back and wait for his reply which will be the best you'll get on the board. Congrats!

Re: First Colonial Copper

I concur with it being a 1787 Maris 48-g, one of the most common varieties and it will be the 13th one in my survey for that variety. In my survey I will be listing the most common ground founds to the rarest ground founds and M.48-g as of now is the 3rd most common variety in the survey.
Your coin is the seventh reported found in Westmoreland County......

Congrats on the find and thanks for the county info.

Thanks everyone! Don, I did include the county info for you as I seemed to remember you doing some sort of record keeping. Is your survey just for NJ colonials or all colonials?

I'm just pleased as punch.

I am doing just NJ coppers, there are other surveys going, a Va Halfpenny one, any Woods copper and Rosa Americana. As far as I know no one is doing CT, VT, or Mass coppers that I know of at the moment.
