Garrett Ace 250
... and wow, does it look cruddy. It reminds me of the old Polident commercial where they soaked some dentures in tea for a week. Anyway, I'm excited. It was the first really good, solid repeatable signal I've gotten with my Ace 250. It read as a dime at 2 inches, and sure enough, there it was. After beer cans, paint can lids, and nails, it was a great feeling to realize "this thing really works!" Too bad it couldn't be silver, but I guess that will come later. Maybe I need to venture outside of my yard!

As for cleaning, what do you recommend? I've read the posts about olive oil, Simichrome, etc. I'd like something that's relatively easy and quick (since it's just clad) but that will do a decent job (after all, it's my first coin). Maybe Polident?

I've been known to head for McD's dollar menu for lunch while out detecting all day. You should see the look on the kids' face when I plop down a pile of freshly dug clad...hehehehe.

McDonald's is not a bad idea. If it wasn't my first coin, I'd probably put it into the first vending machine I came across.

I WOULD PUT IN A 2X2 COINHOLDER, LABEL IT "FIRST COIN FOUND" AND PUT IT ON THE FIRST PAGE OF A COIN ALBUM LABELED "TREASURE FOUND". KEEP DIGGING!

Congrats on your first coin Waco!!

Nana ;)

Like BigAl said, put it into coin holder and label it.If you clean it you'll wonder what it looked like when you dug it.First find.....Congrat's and move on to the next coin holder(silver/gold).Nice find and HH!!

I remember my first coin, a half eaten, rotten penny. I thought, what have I got myself into. It only got better after that :). Congrats on your first coin, and good luck outside of the yard.

Waco,

Congrats on the first coin find. I'm not really into sentimental value on finds. I appreciate the fact that we are finding something that has been lost sometime in history and now you hold it in your hand. Some items will hold more historical value than others and some are merely insignificant to anyone but yourself (most).. I try to clean my coins just to have a better look at them. A slow soak in vinegar for a few days works good with copper or silver (gently brush with a fine brass brush daily and continue soaking until most all the oxidation is gone) pitting or flaking will normally be prevalent if the oxidation is thick. Sometimes you wind up worse off after cleaning than before you started, just a chance you take.--- If you know the coin is rare I would not attempt to clean it.-------

I keep every one that I find

You're on your way, Waco. ;)

Some people spend their clad....some keep it. I'm a packrat so I keep mine. It does come out of the ground looking pretty nasty. Wait until you find your first silver....you'll be amazed at how nice and shiny it will be when you pull it out of the ground.

Happy hunting.

Congrats on your first coin!! I agree with the others who said keep it the way it is, and label it as "My first coin". Dirty coins have character, lol! Take that ACE250 to a schoolyard on Saturday and hunt the playground and ballfields, you sure as heck see that it works just fine!! Good luck!

:) A rock tumbler, aquarium gravel, a little detergent and some water. Just the ticket for those dirty clads. I've never have had any trouble getting the bank to take them after this treatment. I've even started a separate account at the bank, just for the clads I find. They sure add up quickly and I use the money to buy detecting supplies such as batteries, paying for gas etc.....makes the hobby pay for itself and keeps the wife happy by not dippin into the grocery money (Hahaha)

Waco,

HH for em :)

I remember my first coin Waco.A 1943 penny. Still have it somewhere.
Keep digging and you will be rewarded. Vern

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. I'm thinking I may just leave that little sucker looking nasty. It will make for a nice contrast if I ever find a double eagle!
