I went back to the old high school yesterday after the ring return and spent 4 hours with the CZ21 grid searching one of the sports fields. It started out as a 30 degree day and ended as a 54 degree day. I’m glad it is finally starting to warm up. I found 49 coins with a face value of $2.10, an old screw top for a thermal container, a .32 cal. Smith & Wesson blank, a modern mashed lead bullet, ace bandage fasteners, a cheapy earring, a heart pendant, a small watch, the eagle button, and 2 wheaties, 1920 & 1924. Of course I also found a nice pile of tabs, foil and can slaw.
The watch is missing the front and the crystal. The back is marked 10k ROLLED GOLD PLATE which means less than 5% gold. Better than regular plated, but about the same as gold filled. Gold, but not much gold.
A mid tone target that sounded like a tab produced a CW button. The button has been hit by something. A lot of the ring tabs I find here are bent like the ones I found on a field at a different school where I know they used a rototiller to get the field ready for reseeding. This button looks like it may have had the same problem. The shield and the C are easy to see and the backmark is rough, but I can tell it is SCOVILL MFG CO, WATERBURY which makes it 1850-1865. I found it about 20 feet from where I found the Watervliet Arsenal bullet the other day.
Another good hunt with one nice keeper. That’s my second civil war button with a letter in the shield this year. Both were firsts for me, you’ve got to love it when new kinds of relics find their way under your coil. Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
