WOW what a day digging in the dirt in Platte County Missouri! Went dirt fishing with a friend of mine today and I found my first Civil War general service Eagle button along with a Civil War Dragoon Eagle button. The first thing I found though was this trade token. from 1853-1854 from Weston Missouri.

Here is some info from one that was sold.

Scarce (1853-54) M.A. Abrahams Missouri Token, Miller-Mo-41, MS63 NGC
(1853-54) M.A. Abrahams, Weston, MO, Miller-MO-41, MS63 NGC. Brass. This outstanding token was issued when Missouri was the jumping-off location for the Wild West. Merchants such as Abrahams provided goods for emigrants and traders who traveled in long wagon trains out to Oregon, New Mexico, California, and elsewhere. Abrahams was previously located in Independence, MO, in the 1830s and 1840s before moving to Weston. The token is about as nice as can be found. A similar piece in AU brought $330 in 1988, and an Uncirculated piece brought $450 in 1992. The obverse features a rendition of George Washington, with a denomination 10 below the bust. The reverse has a bit of dark staining that scarcely detracts from this rare and highly collectible Missouri token. (PCGS# 661100)

HI BOB!

That is a Dragoon....... which means you should be smiling to an extent that Superman couldn't slap it off you face. The token is another OMG....Ha ha...... Congrats.

Haven't found a dragoon in a-while, being in Stafford,Virginia we had 140,000+ union soldiers camp and move through here during basically the whole war, those dragoons use to be somewhat common to find around here but lately not many coming outta the ground around here... i remember my first letter general service button was a I -Infantry and then a dragoon, i think i may have dug only 5 or 6 Dragoons out of probably 500 general service buttons - So pretty rare button in today's time good job on that...

Very cool find. That is an earlier dragoon button and out your way they tend to lead to good camps. I would look around as you might be on to a nice early 1850s dragoon camp before you know it.

Thanks everyone. HomeGuardDan, we were told last week by the owner who is in her late 80's that her great grandmother is buried somewhere on the property and there were civil war soldiers that were killed somewhere on her property and buried. She said there was a skirmish somewhere around there. They have never been able to find the graves though. She said her great grandfather told her when she was little that all this happened there.

Fantastic recoveries. I love that token.
Congrats,
MM

oh yeah finding a first GS button is one to get your heart pumping, but the dragoon button and the token are Great finds. I can't wait to see what's next and be careful on how much info you give of where your hunting, because with Civil war relic hunting you might find a friendly conversation might turn into others knocking on the same door.

Thanks for the advice Bill. I went again today and got another Dragoon cuff button with shank, a 1867 Shield nickel, a thimble, and some other stuff. I will get photos tonight and post another thread for these finds. Damn what a day again!
