Looks Civil War to me. Where there is one there will be more. Congrats on first bullet.

yep, looks like CW to me too.

Sweet. Thank you for the help. I have found a lot of iron around the spot so I am gonna keep searching.

I say it's civil war era, probably a .58 or .54 caliber. It looks dropped so there could be others close by. Congrats.

58 caliber minie ball or some call it a 3 ringer. Hard to say if it was dropped by a Civil War soldier because common folks used them too even though it wasnt that common. But definitely Civil War era! Nice Find!

Thank you all. I found a ton of iron scrap but no more bullets. There was Civil War activity around where I found the bullet so I may find more in the future.

Congrats on your first 3 ringer! :occasion14:

Definitely a cool bullet. Without a diameter measurement guesses at the caliber are guesses since they came in several sizes. Like TMD says it could have been used by a civilian hunter. This was actually pretty common in the rural areas of the south and west. Remember Grant said all the southern troops could keep their rifles so they could hunt for food which was in such shortage back at their homes. As the government phased in breech loading rifles to the military they sold off most of the muzzle loaders as army surplus and poorer folks used them for hunting all over the country for years after the civil war. Since you are near civil war activity it could well have been dropped by a soldier enroute to a camp or battle, you could look up and see if troops were marched through your area. Hope you find a lot more!!

You are right about them being common in the west. I've found probably a dozen around Yuma and the old railroad and stage stops between Blaisdell and Aztec.
