Hello all,

Just got into metal detecting January 2013. Saw and episode of Dig Fellas and it reminded me of this bottle/trash dump I discovered, when I was fishing, about 8 years ago, along a local creek. Went and checked it out yesterday. I brought home several items. I was able to identify a milk, talcom powder, and soda bottle. Several canning jars. Most of items seems to be from the 50's. I don't know what the long bar with the loops on the end is. Can anyone help me out? I might need to add there was a flour and saw mill about a mile upstream that started in 1853 and closed in 1953.

Man those are some cool bottles!

Glad you remembered where to go back and look.Is that an old plate I see?

It's a good start for a collection, and the item on top is the latest item thrown into the dump. I've dug dumps that are many feet deep and they were still producing better finds as we dug down.

Check for a false bottom to your dump. Often, the old dump was covered in a layer of dirt and then they kept using it. The glassware you have isn't very old, and if your house is as old the mill, you should have MUCH older stuff. If there is no more trash below the bottom, get a probe and try to find the older dump or privy hole.

CoilyGirl: The plate is a Sterling, from East Liverpool, Ohio. Restaurant grade dinner plate. I'm guessing from 1950's.
PeteWmass: I found one beer can. All aluminum, Weidemann Brand, however it was in really bad shape, all shredded and the top was missing.

Still looking for an answer as to what the long rod with loops on the end is. If anyone can identify what that is I would greatly appreciate it.

cool finds! the rod with the loops I have seen in cable supports in buildings and have seen on a few tall electrical poles in the support cables.

Neat finds! :icon_thumleft: I hope you heed the good advice from others to dig deeper or probe for older dump or privy.

Have you detected the mill site yet? If not, I hope the landowner gives you permission as you may find great old coins there. HAVE FUN! Andi
