Well winter is here unfortunately. We got 2.5 inches of icy crud covering the ground and then 3 days of snow showers and flurries that added up to 3 inches of snow on top of the ice. Now the temperatures are in the 20s and teens. Add to that the holiday season keeps me busy with family stuff and that makes it hard to even try to get out. (Usually the family stuff is on the good weather days and the free days are the bad weather days, Murphy’s Law at work).

DAY 1
It warmed up a little and so I went east and found that there was only a little snow so after running a few errands I managed to get 3 hours of swingin in before I had to get ready for a night out with the family. I did a wander around in areas not ice and snow covered and got lucky.

In the 3 hours the CZ21 managed to sniff out 27 coins with a face value of $3.29, an aluminum rivet washer, a silver dime, a lead knock out of some kind, 2 keys, a battery cable end, an old hammer head, some tabs and a bunch of can slaw.

The dime is an 1898 Barber that is pretty well worn. It came out of the ground in a coin ball of dirt. When I popped the ball the dime fell out. It was a nice surprise. The hammer looks like a stone mason hammer. Stone masons use a wide variety of different hammers to shape the stones for placement.

DAY 2

After all the snow and cold I got a free day so I went back to campus hoping the ground was not frozen too deep so I could do some swingin. The ground was ok so off I went expanding the grid where I found the 3 oldies a while back hoping for more.

Unfortunately no luck. In my short 3 hour hunt I managed to find 31 coins with a face value of $1.69, a small harness buckle, the ring from a dog choker chain, a small piece of stainless chain, an old aluminum toy knife from a play tea set, an interesting bracelet, a few tabs and can slaw.

The bracelet was the most interesting find of the day. It is a cheapie and was molded as one piece, but the design looks like they took 2 matching spoon or fork handles and joined them together at the top to make it. If it was sterling it would be a real winner. Not sterling so not a winner, just an interesting piece of jewelry. I also found a 3/8 inch wide piece of copper pipe that looked like a ring at first, but when you look closely you can see it’s just a piece trimmed off the pipe to get the length right. Oh well at least I can recycle the copper, it’s worth a few pennies at least so it’s not a total loss.

We went back to Baltimore for more appointments so I did some more walking around parking lots. Only 1 dime, 1 nickel and 5 pennies total with 2 cheapie earrings, a key and 2 fake pearls. I found a few other coins in my shopping, including 2 quarters in the coin returns at the mall. I got one coinstar batch of 4 tokens and 4 pennies (2 of them are glued together). So I’m still finding when I’m not swingin, but nothing great, just a little more money.

That’s all for this week and with the low temperatures and family coming into town for Christmas this may be the last hunt of 2022. Of course my year starts May 1st so I still have 4 more months before I call it a year. Everyone have a safe and happy holiday, good luck and keep swingin.

That's a lot of finds! I wonder about that aluminum knife, airline tableware?

Thanks for the reply. The knife is definitely an aluminum toy knife from a play set. Probably from the 50s or 60s if I recall correctly.

Thanks for the input. I’m sorry to say the bracket is not copper or brass. It just has a copper color on the outside. It is a cheapy metal that will look terrible if I tumble it.

Thanks to all, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.
