First attempt at All-Metal & Ferrous

Today I went out with Jim and Larry and hunted an iron infested field. Right off the bat I got something green and assumed and Indian Head. Later I checked it and it was a 1910 Wheat. BOOOO!

I usually run Iron Mask -13 or -14 on my XS and it was a constant null. Decided to try turning off the iron mask and switching from Conductive to Ferrous sounds. It seemed to work. Constant sound of iron, but occasionally I would get a signal that didn't sound the same.

I got a nice old button back, an 1894 Indian Head, and a 1900 V Nickel. I also got something pretty neat. An 1882 Indian Dog Tag. Has anyone else found one this old? I've got one from the teens, but didn't know they went back this far! On the back it reads something, and then underneath that it says Lafayette, IND.

The marbles and the buttons gave off pretty iffy signals ;)

Those are great finds. I love the dog tag. I did not know they made them in the 1800's.

FYI: I run iron mask -15, ferrous sounds, deep on, gain 6, lowest threshold possible, audio 1 always. This setup works really well for me in the woods and even at the beach in the winter. I can tell iron from other stuff. I get fooled on deep rotted iron but overall these settings are great on my EXll.

I used to hunt with deep/fast on, but now I just hunt with Fast on and my gain at 10. But otherwise I hunt with conductive sounds.

Oldest dog tag I have seen. 8)

Booing a 1910 wheatie? ??? Must be nice to be in an area that has the history and naturality to produce such nice old finds.I don't know if you realize how lucky you are. :-\ Nice finds to say the least. :)

Re: First attempt at All-Metal & Ferrous

That is the earliest dog tag I've seen. I found one from 1927 in the shape of a dog's head and a tag dated 1900 about eight years ago, but those are the oldest two I had seen before your post. In some cases, dog tags that old can be quite rare. After all, it looks like the number of tags produced was only in the triple digits that year (although we can't be sure how high). Perhaps the humane society or animal control office in Lafayette would have more information about how many dogs were tagged that year. I don't know how collectible they are, but I'm sure there are collectors out there. Nice find!

Ask this guy about the tag He literally wrote the book on 'em... U.S. Dog License Tags and Related Exonumia. I'm pretty sure he'd be interested in hearing about it.

Re: First attempt at All-Metal & Ferrous

Is the gain you guys refer to the Sensitivity? If so I am a little confused, I run mine as high as possible, usually 24-32. Why do you run it so low?

Haha, I was booing it because we had been told by the property owners that the house was built in the 1820s and was abandoned before wheat pennies would have been around. So when I pulled a green coin out of the ground I just assumed Indian Head.

Yeah, I don't recall seeing any this old. My oldest prior to this was a 1938 and the # on it is 72314, so there were a lot more dogs then!

Fellow EXP II user,

Gain is a setting that you get to through the menu button. It basically makes a deep signal louder so that you can't pass it up. A 8" quarter will sound like it's right on top of the ground basically. My sensitivity never goes higher than 22 or so. In the parks I hunt around 19 and in house sites around 15-17. I've you run it too high you can lose signals that are otherwise loud and clear with a lower sens.

But around here if you go to 24 it becomes really unstable and chattery.

Re: First attempt at All-Metal & Ferrous

Here ya go Brian. I remembered seeing one in my 1992 Tokens and Medals book. Says they started issuing them in the late 19th century. In 92, Pre-1890: $15-$30.

Wow! Thanks for the info buddy to the north! :)

Re: First attempt at All-Metal & Ferrous

Yea, thats a pretty cool piece. Yours is even a much earlier tag than the one pictured because of the number.

Re: First attempt at All-Metal & Ferrous

bscofield6,

Thanks, I see you are talking about audio gain. I have not tried setting it other then factory. Maybe I should. It would definitely get more sound out of lower readings.
