I have not posted in a while and my hunting has been somewhat limited lately due to a busy work schedule. The silver coins have been tough to find lately with just a few dimes and a war nickel and a decent 1895 V-nickel. I have been scouting some new spots recently and have not had much success. Two days ago I did dig a fairly chunky 18K ring from the turf but I also found two other rings in the past 4-6 weeks that I thought I would share.

The first ring I found was a vintage silver ring from Portugal that opens up to reveal a secret compartment. The inside of the compartment has a gold appearance and might be plated with some gold. The ring still functions properly with the lid locking down. My impression is that it is likely a more recent drop even though the ring appears to be somewhat old. This ring was found in the turf at an old park in SF:

The second ring is stamped 10K and is a rather large men's gold nugget ring. It weighs 18.55 grams! I found the ring at a park in SF where they have been removing all of the ivy on a hillside in the park. I found some interesting old age indicators and found this ring just as I was about to wrap up the short afternoon hunt. When I found the ring it was a dull brown in appearance but clearly stamped 10K. I soaked it overnight in vinegar and in the morning it was shining like gold. There are some prongs where two small diamonds or fake diamonds would have been mounted on the ring but were not attached when I found it. I am doubtful that it is solid 10K. It appears as though it might just have a very heavy coating of 10K gold on it. I suppose I will find out when it eventually makes its way to the refiner!

The final ring I found two days ago on Thursday afternoon when I was accompanied by Jayson (StayDetuned), Peter (Turf_aholic) and Chris (Nicasian). I wasn't having much luck and it was a short afternoon hunt after half a day's work. I was working the turf along the side of a path cutting across the park when I got a weird sounding target that was actually 2 separate targets that were a couple of inches apart. One signal was higher and the other lower. I cut a plug big enough to encompass both targets, and when I flipped the plug over the pointy part of the ring was poking out. I was delighted to see the bright shiny gold emerge from the dirt. This ring is stamped 18K and weighs a respectable 8.22 grams. It has what appears to be a ruby and a piece of cut crystal in the shape of a heart. The crystal is fractured. The ring is dented up pretty good, probably from having been stepped on for several years. The ring was maybe 3-4 inches deep. The other target that came out of the hole was a very shiny piece of lead. The 18K ring rang up just like a pull-tab.

:icon_thumleft: Red here, OMG you have found some wonderful jewelry!!! I can't decide which I love more, the one with the hidden compartment, or the 18 karat one! :help: That looks like a garnet in the last ring, I would get the stones checked out, you never know what they might be! You did great!!!!! :icon_thumright: :hello2: :headbang:

Thanks for the nice comments! :icon_thumright:
I like these three rings and they are the last three rings I have found that were not junk rings. The silver ring is quite ornate and I love the small compartment. I like the 10K just because it is so big. And of course I like the 18K because it is 18K. ;D

Red: It could be a garnet. I am a total novice when it comes to stones. The first thought that popped into my head was "red ruby" but I really have no clue. The clear cut stone is interesting because it is thin, maybe the thickness of a dime or penny. I have never seen a stone so thin and yet faceted like it is. ???

Anyhow, thanks again for the nice comments and happy hunting!

Congratulations on the beautiful ring finds Larry! :notworthy:
The Portuguese ring does look to have some age to it, possibly mid to late Victorian period!
If your 10K gold nugget ring is a real 10K . . . the scrap value would be at $408! :hello2:

I wish that nugget ring was 24K! Then the cash register would be ringing for sure. :laughing7:
I will probably send that ring to refiner along with the 18K and another that I found when gold hits $2000, which should be in January or maybe sooner.
That 18K sure has a nice color on it!
