First 1800's Coin!
Well, this isn't exactly "today's find," it was found more like a month ago.
My cousin and I were at a local 1730's fort site (now a potato field) It was our third time there. Never had previously found much, (while my cousin was popping out buttons and relics like there was no tomorrow), then after a slow hour, got a solid 18 to 22 VDI on his White's Spectrum XLT, in other words, a nickel/small gold/foil reading. I dug down 4-5 inches like it said, took
out the plug, whipped out my pinpointer, and started probing. After I found it, I lifted up my pin pointer and staring at me was a beautiful green disc. Without even looking at the date, I knew that this was my first V-Nickel and my first 1800's coin!
After wiping a little dirt off of the back to confirm what it was, and recovering from a momentary state of shock (this whole process took less than a minute) I sprinted across the field to my cousin to show him my treasure! He was equally as excited as I was, since it had been 3+ months since I got my first detector (ok maybe he wasnt QUITE as excited as I was)
Then the excitement grew as I read the date...1883 !!!! This just happens to be the first year that they were made!
It is a Var. 1 No "Cents" Obverse, as of 2007, worth about $8 in current condition! Here is a picture of it along with one that I found on 10-4-10. I just LOVE the patina on this coin!!! I also found a 1964 nickle with a less prominent, but visible, green patina at the same site as well.
