From you description it sounds like you have a fired round ball. Would it be possible for you to give us a picture and maybe some measurements.

It doesnt have to have been fired to have oxidation on it.Without a picture nobody will have a clue.

Sorry I forgot the pictures but they should be the first comment and it is a little less than an inch flattened. I also know that it can get the patina with out it being fired sorry I just worded it funny.

The top picture on the left shows a design,the flat part has a hole in it most likely for an eye to be used to sew it to cloth.In my opinion its a button,most likely pewter.

Looks more like a button than a bullet.

I agree that it looks like a button. Sometimes soldiers would make buttons out of bullets or maybe he was just carving on it. Cool find
