I found this pit about 25 years ago when I was a kid. I just now got around to MD it. The pit is about 15 by 15 feet and 5ft deep with foundation rocks all around it. I have searched the site about 5 times and found nothing but nails all around it. I went back today and started digging out the pit to see if I could get a little deeper. I dug down about a foot and found a fire place base with ashes still around the sides. Does anyone know what this site may have been? I am going back this weekend and excavate some more.

After reading Night Stalkers post in Best of... I'd be digging up and under those bricks in a heartbeat.

Dang, I just changed my shirt, and now you have started to drool again...Mmmm Bar-b-que

It may be a charcoal or brick kiln.

Many years ago ,transportation was very expensive so bricks were made locally and charcoal was produced for metalworking where coal was not available.

This is what I think it was too. The bricks were expensive during the time and that is why the old walls are missing. I would check around the area for anything else that may have gotten left behind.

Get-r-dug.
Yep!
Somebody was there at some point...bound to be some keepers around. I also see lots and lots of poison oak there. :P

Good luck! Nana :)

WTG. If it is a moonshiner's site, there could be a cache anywhere in the area.

Hmmm... Let's add it up...

Fire pit
Knife
Bucket (and probably the remains of mop somewhere nearby...)
ketchup & whiskey bottles

Whiskey Barbeque Sauce

1 small onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup whiskey
2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup vinegar
2 Tbsp. tomato paste
1/4 cup Worchestershire sauce
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp. liquid smoke
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. salt

Still looks like a pig roasting pit to me... but that's just me... ;) :D
