Finished Cow Field.....I found ZERO..........& a Roman key handle

First picture is my zero...

We finished the 1.5 acre Cow field in 4 hours (8 man hours). Dad took some convincing to continue with this field but I like things done until the end. Glad I did as towards the far end a got a good signal at 3inches which turn out to be a ROMAN BRONZE KEY HANDLE (second one ever but the best by far).

Finds also included;

GR WWI era Button
Victorian Navy Officers Button
Triumph Herald keys (might be the old man's that owns the field!)
Boer War lead head soldier
Silver 1902 3 pence
Silver hallmarked shield
1902 Aluminium medallion

To say I was happy with the key is an understatement. ;D

Thanks, the key was a susprise as it was the same depth as most of the Victorian stuff we had. So it had been plough many years ago :)

Re: Finished Cow Field.....I found ZERO..........& a Roman key handle

CRUSADER, that key handle is striking! Very nicely shaped. . . are key handles
that age typically that ornate or could it have belonged to someone of importance?

Good Luck in future fields,

Very interesting & thought-out question.

The last handle I had was a simple rod with a loop at the end (Low status).
This trefoil type is fairly typical of a 1-2nd century key & is not that uncommon (although it took me & my Dad 30 years combined searching to find just 1  ). However it is a medium/high status piece because it was used to safe guard valuables in a strengthen box. Which makes me think we are getting closer to the Villa which I'm slowing tracking down. This item was logged with our GPS for further reference.

Hey Crusader,

I have a question for you. I plan on coming to England on my 25th Anniversary which is in less then 5 years and I want to do some detecting. Do you need a license to detect? I know you need to have Archie check out your items first. How do you go about finding these Archies to show them your finds? Can you detect around the Thames river? Any information you can give me would be very appreciated. Thank you and I enjoy looking at your finds. Take care!

Your Friend,

Steve in Michigan
