Finds from park I can't dig. (Finished all public areas).

I got permission to detect, but not to dig. See post for details:

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,88215.msg629772.html#msg629772

Anyway, found 1 quarter on the surface, 2 pennies which the pinpointer was able to find (and uncovered with the plastic knife at bottom) and a few bolts. The rest were found in the bark under the only set of swings. Everything else in the tot lot has a green/black foam mat down.

Total for day 2 Q, 2D, 1N, 29P

Re: Finds from park I can't dig. 34 coins.

Well that's kind of impressive, really. I have two coin probes and never got the hang of using them. One is 12" long and I can see it's foolish to think a coin could be "popped" from even a fraction of that depth. But just probing the sod and taking what the pinpointer spots . . . I like that. I guess I'll have to re-add the short one to my utility belt arsenal when hunting.

Did you de-tune or shut down the sensitivity to avoid temptation? It would kill me to have a solid silver read at 6" and not be able to get to it.

LOL. Exactly what I did. ;D. I was working on low disc, but also dropped my sensitivity down to about 4 of 12. My Garrett has a 9X12 inch elliptical coil, so it should see deep. And I didn't want that.

I did "scuff" hits in the bark was deep as 4 inches, just to remove the top 2-3 inches. Then I pinpointed. Did I cheat? I'll let you all be the judge. :)

i hate places that tell you NO digging. "like the grass sod or soil will not come back" well it is good to see that you followed th'ing bylaws and respected there wishes. best of luck to you in future hunts

I have to agree pip, I think it is a kick to the teeth to go detecting and come across a good target knowing you can not dig it up that really is a tease >:(

Re: Finds from park I can't dig. 34 coins.

Digging is in the eyes of the beholder. What some would call digging I call probing. ::) Cutting a small sod piece and folding it back is probing ;D

At no dig sites I'd use a coin popper or bent screw driver. It takes practice and you'll scratch almost everything but at least you're making finds.

Thanks for the comments and compliments. I finished the last sand/chips at the elementary school today. Took a total of five hours over two days. Found a costume heart pendant and doubled my wife's car collection. Only thing she has gotten excited about so far :D.

Won't be back anytime soon. It's a very small town.

Total for 2 days: 4 Q, 10 D, 5 N, 28 P.

You can detect but not dig...huh
you can eat but not swallow...
you get paid but can't spend it...

Well, glad you made the best of it Sheldius.
I like Badgers idea... it takes some practice for sure.

Now that would really be torture.......I don't think I could handle that situation without breaking some laws. Congrats on self control. I experienced something similar when I went to this park and couldn't dig past the frozen soil. I was getting good hits but couldn't get to them..........that freaking sucked.

Badger is doing it right. Many don't know how to retrieve a coin that is down six inches or so without digging a hole. Doesn't anyone else use the old screwdriver trick of bending the tip over to make a retriever out of the screwdriver? By inserting it like a probe you can feel the coin and catch the edge and turn it. Then it is a simple manner of grabbing it with the edge or a long nose forceps. Just make the ground look like nobody was there.

Now a real tease is an old drive-inn theater that has the lot blacktopped. You can see where the readout says Silver Quarter down 2 inches and you can't get at it. But, since the property isn't in use anymore and just waiting for a buyer, I am going to bring my chisel and a hammer, or a Mason's hammer. ;)

Now that is a Hard Core MD'er. My hat is off to you.

I just can't pinpoint well enough yet to make probing worth while. Maybe an expert can fly down (or up) to Georgia and show me how it's done. ;) LOL.
