The nice weather prompted me to head back out to an old gold mine where I've found some interesting things in the past. I could see by fresh footprints and lots of freshly dug holes that someone had been detecting here recently, probably on the weekend. Well, they didn't get everything!
My favorite finds were a drink token from a railhead ghost town in the Mojave Desert and an AB match safe with the matches still inside!

Along with the usual period finds was the most complete clay pipe I've ever found, an old pocket knife that had MOP on the brass scales, a mechanical pencil, part of a lantern with a patent date of Feb. 11 1873, and some sort of clothing fastener that says "Climax Lou KY", "Pat. Mar. 27 1888" and "Patented in Great-Britain, United States, & Germany".
Cartridges include a "primrose" UMC Majestic No. 10, a 45-90 W.C.F., .44 W.C.F., .38 Colt Special, .45 Colt, .32 S&W, and an unfired 30-30 Winchester.

The little medicine bottle has several cracks in it, but is in one piece and is turning purple so I saved it.
The pipe bowl was in three pieces and I glued it back together.

Love it! The match safe is amazing, do I see a money clip too?

Thanks Nathan! I think it's some kind of clothing fastener.

Some cool finds there, especially the match safe.

I believe the item marked “Climax Lou KY" and "Pat. Mar. 27 1888" will relate to John V. Pilcher’s patent for an “improved attachment-clamp for clothing”:

The dirt was nice to that match safe and token!! Great stuff!! I was lucky to dig a complete pipe detecting, digging out a little trash pit.
That's the thing here, there really isn't 'dirt' per se, just varying sizes of rock from sand to boulders. Usually things are ruined from getting crushed and abraded. Got lucky on this one!

The match box is fantastic.
What are those matches made from, the old papery sort of one?
I found one once with them still in it but neither the box, vestsa, nor the matches were anywhere near the condition of that one.
Im thinking your desert type environment helped preserve it all so well.
Cool 👍

Ditto - to all the responses so far! Wow, what a tremendous find - Congratulations!:hello2::headbang::notworthy:

Doesn't get much better than that!

Congratulations n the match safe, with the intact matches.
I guess it's going to be getting a spot in the showcase sometime soon.
