I'm usually able to find sterling that is weighted and I buy it if it's under scrap value.
This week I was surprised when I picked these two pieces.
A Gorham sterling reticulated bowl with a date code of 1915. I paid $50 for it. At first I thought it wasn't monogrammed but the price tag covered a single S. Well that's fine since my last name starts with S. It weighs 10.75 Troy ounces.
Next I picked up a heavily tarnished dish that I could find no markings. It felt like silver to me and for $8 I took a risk. After polishing the bottom I saw the mark for German 800 silver. It weighs 2.75 Troy ounces.
