finally...silver and a big ol' copper
It's been a rough spring, not a lot of time to hunt and when I can get out I've been getting skunked. Decided to go out at dusk last night to a section on an old golf course, sticking to the rough so as not to get clocked by a ball (guys were out until dark, now that's dedication!). Within five minutes I got a nice hit and popped out a silver quarter. Only my second piece of silver for '08. Not long after I hit a pocket spill with another quarter, two mercs, and a buffalo nickel....at this point I was stoked, having gotten my silver fix and then some. For the next 30 minutes or so I continued getting great signals, some new clad and some trash, but also another silver dime, a silver tie clip and fob, an Indian Head, and several wheats.
Then, as I'm leaving, a big honking yell from the Fisher under an old pine. About three inches down I feel a big coin; at first I thought it was a clad half dollar, it was getting dark so I couldn't quite make it out, though I knew it wasn't silver. When I get home and brush off the dirt there's King George staring up at me! Couldn't believe it. As far as I can tell it's a New York copper, although I can't find it in any of my books. Not too many left-facing busts listed with the colonial coppers, and I can't quite make out the full date, just the "17". I'm dying to find out what it is, but I don't want to mess with it too much. It's in pretty good shape...I can read most of the lettering. Anyone know what variety this might be? Obverse clearly reads "Georgius III Rex", reverse "Britannia".
Hoping to get back out there this evening, so maybe I'll have something else to post tomorrow!
Thanks for looking, and HH,
Steve
