Ever since I've started metal detecting, I've wanted a big fat civil war plate. Today, my wish was granted. I finally was granted permission to metal detect a very historic home, which was also used as a civil war hospital for both US and CS troops at two separate times. This was kinda the "culture" type of day as the Stealth Diggers would say. I wanted to get a feel for the site before it got dark. I started in what's now the backyard, where the most land was. Unfortunately I couldn't lock onto something old. It was a shame that this area was excavated. I dug some clad and a whistle. Probably a kids, nothing too special. I move into the side yard, where the electronical interference was almost unbearable at 10 gain. I lower it to 7 and got a decent signal down about 8"... It's a harmonica reed. The first old target of the day. I went around to the front yard of the house, which at first felt like the backyard, only with more cans. I get a smaller penny signal after digging tons of cans and I dug a weird piece of brass. Almost looks like a spur but I know it's not. Any ideas? I go right up against the original house foundation and I get the sweet sound of a nice can again at 4" and this time when I get it out, it felt heavy, like lead. I was like... That's no can... And I flipped it over and saw the "US", my heart raced and hands started trembling! Realizing what you've found is one of the BEST feelings!!! The rest of the hunt was slow after that, which was odd. I got a button, modern silver Jesus medallion, and a couple other odds and ends. Wow!!! What an awesome feeling it was to dig it!!! It's a CARTRIDGE BOX PLATE, there's no Arrows or Paws, only the rust left from the iron that once attached! It's been an AWESOME week! I'll be going back very soon! HH guys!
