Without knowing how much $ where u live what kind of detecting,Water land coins jewelry gold relic, I would have to say the tiger shark, the most versatile best warranty durable good to 200 ft of water and reasonably priced. Most people after using one for awhile wish they had got it first. About $640. Your dad would like to use it when u r busy. Can mount control on belt to lighten load. Weighs nothing under water. I am also short (5 ft.) and the only one i've used is the ace 250 from garrett. I haven't had any trouble with the length of it. I do think most are adjustable.

and you can compare a bunch of diff. MD's and it should tell what the min and max length is on them. Also the weight I believe. Good Luck and COngrats!
 

Yeah, I'm willing to spend between 200-300. I detect mostly coins and relics, but will be hunting beaches this summer. :)
 

Some machines are better for salt water and some for fresh. If you want to hunt in the sand or very shallow water, you can use the ACE 250, but only the coil can get wet. Water machines are much more expensive. I loved my ACE 250 and I am short. Lightweight and easy to learn. Garrett has a great service department, too.
 

If you really can't wait to get a tiger shark I would suggest the Silver umax, Cibola or even a Compadre with some left over for a pin pointer. You get the most bang for the buck withTesoro with out silly features that really don't help you find treasure. You have to be digging pulltabs if you hope to find gold rings no matter what the screen is telling you. The Cibola has the added feature of an alternant operating frequency if you get interference from your dads machine when hunting with him. I have been reworking sights that I hit real hard with my minelabs Quattro that cost over $1000 with my new tiger shark found over 30 coins in three hours that I had missed. I also dug twice as many pulltabs but it is worth it for the opportunity of finding gold rings.
 

I think all detectors are adjustable for different size people. The Silver umax would be a good pick I think...maybe even a Whites Coinmaster or Garrett Ace 250.
 

yeah, the 250 is what I've been using..I think it's great, just didn't know if there was something better in the 200-300 range

I've heard good things about the Fisher F2 and that series. I like the fact that there are numbers to go by. I think it may be a little more accurate.
 

ID machines are pretty accurate for clad coins. Not so accurate for old stuff. Gold, old coins are often way off. Old deep zinc reading gold, gold reading foil, tabs found all but the highest settings. Most recently I used my Quattro to do a sweep of an area to get the easy stuff and went back over digging everything with a clear tone descriminating iron and foil only with my tiger shark and I found 30 coins in 3 hours that I had missed. Admittedly it is pretty cool to think u know what u are digging and be right most of the time. It is not cool to miss a find of a lifetime. It is really cool to have no idea of what you are digging and be surprised every time, especially when that something was something good and overlooked by other more discriminating detectors.

If you find a machine that you like but it does not want to adjust smaller, use a hacksaw to cut the metal portion of the tubing and/or cut the plastic portion. Be sure this is the last resort as cutting it down is irreversible! TTC
 

I think I'm leaning towards the F2...it's even lighter than the 250! :icon_thumleft:
