Hey guys. Man it’s been insanely busy this semester. But break is finally here next week and I managed a few weekend hunts lately. The only fail of a hunt (although it WAS still nice to get out) turned out to be in Mirage’s post about a month ago I think when it was wet and snowy. It was just not a good choice of a site to go to in the given conditions. But anyway, we one day decided just for kicks to hit grandma’s yard again since it was close and the weather was detectorist-friendly. I went by the apple trees in the back of the yard where there are still a decent numb of aluminum/trashy signals and pulled out a merc. It’s amazing how much we continue to find stuff in this yard year after year.
Last weekend the Berg was way overdue for a hunt. It was pretty wet but it felt great to pull 3 silver and an Indian head. That made my third Indian from the Berg. I only found I believe three Indians total last year, so that was pretty sweet. The wandering into the dense/prickery brush paid off. Of course I couldn’t let the classic wheatfield go without a whack, so that turned up a few. One wheat was a 1909 VDB; it could’ve been found somewhere other than the wheatfield though.
Finds from first Berg hunt, solo
And I also found a PAPER DOLLAR BILL lying in the leaves in the pouring rain! I remember seeing people post like $20 bills that they'd find at the beach or something and think "who finds stuff like that out in nature?" lol So that was a first.
And this is a penny still in the tar! Most likely a wheat.
Then Don wanted some of the action the next day…so we stuck it out in the cold rain for a few hours…getting muddy…I ruined a pair of jeans (for indoor wearing use, at least) with mud but oh well, but his lending me a leather waterproofish jacket saved the day. And Don managed to get his boots stuck in the mud and had to come away barefoot…lol…I felt bad that he didn’t get to experience some more interesting finds and also about the messy weather conditions…but we both agreed that it was still cool to be out and hunting together. We walked back to the cars shortly after the loss of boots (fortunately an easily replaceable pair) and parted, I took a food/warmth break and then decided to go back myself to the wheatfield, where I rediscovered quite a phenomenon. I found that I could pick virtually anywhere in the wheatfield that we found tons of wheats, and detect that given immediate area without getting any coin signals. But I just proceeded to dig a crater anyway (and you could do this here in this part of the woods without it being a problem for anyone/anything) RIGHT where the detector would not give a signal and I'd level out my pile of dirt and detect it. Almost every time, I’d get two, three, sometimes four or five wheats in my dirt pile. So who knows, maybe this technique (blind digging and checking) will turn up some silver or some older stuff possibly. It’s crazy though. I’ll be hitting it again this weekend and do this for a couple hours and see what else turns up.
Finds from the second hunt, with Don
So thanks for lookin yall, there should be more cool stuff to post with break coming up...yall take care! 8)
