I have been working a permission occupied since the 1730's. My oldest coin from there was an 1803 half cent. After 3 hours of trash today, I thought I was getting skunked for the day. On the days last pass, a clean signal. Low and behold a 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent. My first largie!

Can anyone offer an opinion on this being worth having conserved and graded? Or... hit it with some Verdicare and call it a day?

If you send it out you might spend $45 (last time that's what it cost me), or more and it will come back probably something like, "authentic, environmental damage" with no grade. I would just leave it as is. Don't do anything to it. It's a beauty for sure.

You really never know what's out there. I broke the 7th century in SC once upon a time ago. A plantation had burned. Some Roman coins had turned up before I got there. I got a 7th century Byzantine coin in great shape. Guy must have been a coin collector. Another time long ago I was digging in NJ. To my surprise I found a 2nd century Roman coin. I don't know where I stuck it...kids drop them, after "looting" them from their dad's collection, they are bought as souvenirs, etc.

Nice coin, great detail. I'm on a quest to find a coin from each century. So far I have 2nd, 6th, 7th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, and of course 21st. Odd I live in a town with a 11th century Norman tower and I haven't found a single medieval coin.

That's a beautiful, beautiful coin. Congrats on finding a coin from the 1700's...especially one that is in such stellar condition. I agree with Smokeythecat...I wouldn't do anything else to that LC. I've messed up my fair share of coins by trying to make them look better.

Lot's of details there - a great find that's in excellent condition !

A big high-5 on your 1700's coin. The soil has been kind to that one. What a beauty. :headbang::hello2::notworthy::thumbsup:

Very nice! They don't come out of the ground any better than that
i would leave it just like it is.

GREAT FIND you might try Andre pencils on it (VERY LIGHTLY) they work wonders :)

WTG on the copper. All that needs is a little soapy warm water bath a slight tooth brush scrub and a good coating of Ren Wax.
