Hello guys,
I just read some posts about coilcovers and coilprotection. Did anybody ever use fiberglass on the coil for protection? Should be the strongest protection i could think of, and its easy to work with. The resin or glass wouldn't interfere, right? Or what about using the glassfiber with epoxy (even better)? Would be good to hear some about that! aleman

It would probably work but would make the coil heavier to swing all day long, resulting in a sore arm. I wrapped strips of inner tube on my coil for a while and even that made it rather heavy to swing.

Some here on the forum have used epoxy to protect the coil, but said it made it heavier. At least you won't be getting black sand inside the cover to drive it nuts so you sent it back only to have them clean out the cover. Tape might be the lightest.

I'm an epoxy guy. Never really noticed a weight difference but I go lite on the covering, maybe two thin coats at most. A friend of mine uses clear rubber air hose, he slits it then slides it around the coil, uses a few strips of duct tape to wrap it secure. Seems to work rather well for him.

sandman is right... do a search on epoxy and Gravediggermax... you'll probably find the post that has the pics of the type of epoxy he uses.

I would go with the epoxy. I've used it on several of my machines and it definitely works better than the coil covers

ps... if you want it to look really professional, run a strip of masking tape arount the upper edge of the coil (almost at the top) then you coat the bottom and sides of the coil with the epoxy. Before it sets up and gets hard, peel the tape away... it leaves a very straight line

The coil of my CZ20 was really getting worn. I aplied 2 thin coats of JB Weld. Works fine. Can not tell a weight difference, besides the coil is in the water most of the time anyways. HH Gayle

I have used epoxy on coils also. I did't notice any extra weight. It is froned on though if you trade the detector in. Now I just use a coil cover and put a FINE bead of silicon around the edge to keep sand out. Mike.

I don't know, but I'd be leary of adding silicone caulk.

Silicon is a metal - right between Aluminum and Phosphorus on the periodic chart. In the same group as Germanium, Lead and Tin. I guess silicone is non-conductive, but I just had a concern here.
