Hello,
I would first like to say it is wonderful to be here. I am new, and I'm sorry the 1st thing I post is a question. I discovered this coin detecting. I have identified it as a Ferdinand VII 1816 Half Escudo coin. The thing is, it has 2 markings I have not seen on any other like it. I'm not sure if it is a counterfeit, or what. On the left side of Ferdinand is the letter "J" , and on the right is the # 8. Has anyone else seen this.
p.s.
the back is worn, and I could not get a clear pic.
Thanks

Welcome to TNet!! We thrive on pics and questions.
The standard issue 1/2 escudo (Mexico) did not have a J to the left or an 8 to the right on the obverse. Actually, that "J" is probably only the king's long hair. The coin should weigh 1.7g and be 15mm in dia. To the left side of the coat of arms on the reverse should be (if Mexican) the 'Mo' mark; to the right 'JJ' for the assayer.
