Well I haven't posted my finds because I haven't found any Silver or Gold in the last three outings. I have also been crazy busy with work, overtime, dentist, and work related schools. Throw in a little laundry and housekeeping, and I have been very fortunate to squeeze in 3 hunts since February 22nd. Lots of Clad, a few wheat pennies, and getting checked by the police.
On Monday, 2-22-16, I managed 56 coins including 2 wheat pennies. Before the hunt was over, the Parks Enforcement Police rolled up on the lawn I was hunting and asked to see my permit. The were polite and happy that I took the time to get a permit. They thanked me for that and wished me luck.

On Saturday, 2-27-16, I decided to try a new park. This park is among the new 127 parks that have been opened up to metal detecting. It is said that from the hills in this park, Washington and his troops would watch British Forces across the Harlem River in Northern Manhattan. With that kind of information, I had to swing a coil over this soil. Well I found 59 coins, including a $1 coin and a toasted wheat but no silver. On the way home as I approached the bottleneck where the southbound Harlem River Drive meets the East Side Drive, the Highway Patrol waved me over. They checked my license, registration, and insurance, as well as the inspection sticker on my bike. With the weather getting nice, these stops will be increased. There are a lot of illegal bikes on the roads in NYC.

Yesterday I tried another new park. This park opened in the late 1880's and was the largest park in The South Bronx. I grew up, not too far from here. It consists of 34 acres and has lots of hills, grass, and trees. Perfect for picnics and lounging. A great place to lose silver coins. Well I recovered 63 coins but no silver. On one hill under a huge Cedar Tree, I observed between 30 and 40 orange caps that came off the end of hypodermic needles. I also noticed at least a dozen needles throughout the parks. The park was being used by families with kids while I was there so I suspect this drug activity is taking place during the night. I guess the Cops are too busy checking up on This Felonious Treasure Hunter,

Looks like it could keep you busy for years, during the day your the closest looking thing to crime that they see. At night I'm sure they have there hands full with the real deal! :-)

Congrats on hose 3 hunts ATW. Sorry to hear about the hassles. You sure dug plenty of targets.

Thanks for the detailed post, man I thought you would've found some silver at those parks. Nice digs though! At least the weather is cooperating, better than the last two years. Look forward to hunting with you when I can make the time. Congrats and HH

With the history there's got to be some silver at those parks...keep hitting them.

Regards + HH

Bill

No fired slugs? I recovered 2 fired slugs in parks in North Omaha this weekend. Nasty neighborhood now, so I would be out there at first light and quit by 10am

We got all the history in the world but that don't mean that someone hasn't beaten me to the silver.
Years ago, long before the NYC parks were opened to metal detecting, , we would take our chances and search. The park's dept. is just allowing us into a lot of new parks, but that doesn't mean that they were never hunted before. lol
I'll keep searching for that pocket of silver that someone else missed.

In the 90s, my uncles produce truck got stolen in Astoria by some junkies and they found it trashed port Morris...he asked me to ride with him to go check it out...no thanks!! Has the place gotten any nicer??

Police Officers have a variety of daily duties. One minute it may be a basic citizen call for service, a shoplifting complaint, an assault, a traffic accident or a felony in progress. Sometimes they are required to handle more insignificant calls like illegal parking or checking a variety of permits required by their local government. These are duties that most officers do not like to perform. Often times they are required to handle these matters per supervisory orders. Citizen complaints to City Council or the Mayor's Office often predicate this police action. There are different types of law enforcement officers to include State Troopers, Sheriff's, City Police, Transit Police, Housing Police and even Park Police. Depending on the department, their job description may vary.

It's sad that the park has dangerous drug paraphernalia laying around; especially with children around. Parks are unfortunately an area frequently used by drug users. I'm sure if the Police observed illegal drug use prior to checking your permit, it would have taken precedence over your encounter. Can you honestly say that the Police have not arrested drug users and drug dealers at this park on previous occasions.

There are many more criminals than police. I don't understand why so many folks are jumping on the anti-police bandwagon. Although there are a few bad apples, the majority of the officers on the street are good honest cops. This reminds me of a drunk driver telling the officer, "Why aren't you out catching murders and rapist." Hmmm!

Look what happened to Baltimore when the Mayor told the Police to turn their backs to rioting and let the protesters vent. For everyone who wants to bash the police, I want them to picture utter fear if every officer called in sick for a week; all at one time. As much as I detest Big Government, I feel blessed to live in a country that has law & order. Sadly this too is eroding away. Sadly, anti-police sentiment will have a significant impact on the personal safety of you and your family.

I can honestly say that this post made my blood boil. I'd much rather read about everyone finds. Against the Wind, I might suggest that you collect all your detecting money in a jar. When you feel like you have enough cash, randomly find a Police Officer and buy him/her a hot dog and a drink from a sidewalk vendor. If you sit down and share lunch and a friendly conversation, you will find that they are just like you and me. Make this stinking post up by telling them how much you appreciate them. I guarantee they'll tell you that it means a lot to them. In the mean time, I hope you find a gold ring on your next outing.

Thanks for the response and for venting your feelings. My intent was not to create contraversy or feed into any kind of anti-cop sentiment. I got stopped because these cops were doing their jobs
I didn't receive any violations because I was doing my job. I do not intentionally violate the law.
I live in a city that has a police force that numbers around 36,000 strong. Some say that number isn't high enough.
I have been a civil servant for 26 years and will soon retire. During those years it has been a privelege to be a part of an Emergency Response Team. We have worked shoulder to shoulder with NYPD as well as NYFD. Before the fiscal crisis of the 70's and the numerous layoffs that it brought, I was on the NYPD hiring list. I have numerous friends and family who have retired from the force. No sir,, I will not bash these brave young men and women who serve the community with courage and dedication. Many are veterans of the armed forces and I would be the last person to bash our military.
If you sensed any resentment in my post, then please believe me, it was not directed at the police. It was the druggies who not only use their drugs in public places, but then leave their sharps where some kid will get stuck. Or the unlicensed motorcycle rider, who doesn't care for rules and will drive recklessly and give all bikers a bad name. The police that stopped me were courteous and professional. I'm sorry you feel the way you do because of my post. I personally think it is a little bit of an overreaction. I do not dislike police and I do have first hand knowledge of what sometimes controls their daily assignments. Yes, it is sad that sometimes a post is used to vent someone's personal feelings but again, I think for the most part that Police Officers are good Citizens.

Kevin I did not get any anti-police sentiment from your post. I to see the same filth of needles and drug bags that litter to our parks and that is a shame.

Last time I was in the park in the city I was checked by NYPD who were courteous and I was glad to show them my permit, and I'm glad they were checking.

God bless our military, police, and firefighters.

Great Pictures & Story ...
YOU CRIMINAL YOU.

P.S. They have likely pulled a few OD'S From under that tree lately, with all the Smack on the Streets these Day's.

Anyhoo. The pictures are beautiful. Especially the one with the "castle" like structure in the background. What is that building?

It's an old high school.
Thought maybe the kids might have dropped a few silver dimes in the park. Thanks

it really is sad that the junkies use the parks for their drug activities. I've found some needles in a park in the next town. They have no concern for anyone else, especially little kids. All they care about is getting their fix. I think the penalty should be death by sword.

That is hands down the fanciest high school I have ever seen! Wow. Do you know what it was originally?

I used to ride my bike around with my detector in a backpack when I was still in college. Great way to scout for inconspicuous little areas to detect when you're in an urban area. Problem: when the detector was disassembled, the lower section that is attached to the loop looked like the barrel of a shotgun sticking out of the top of the backpack. Now there's a great way to get yourself stopped by the police! The solution is to put a tennis racket cover over the top of it while it's in your backpack.

Illegal bikes, huh? Sounds like Mr. Po-Po was just looking for an excuse to arrest you.
