This may be my most favorite artifact I've ever found. It is certainly not your usual artifact.
Pic 1 It was just a pic of the outline of the artifact. This artifact looks like nothing special and I found it in a cave in NW FL. It is made of poor grade coastal chert with a high density of limestone. A state archaeologist dated it to the Archaic culture but the cave was inhabited all the way through the Ft Walton peoples. I feel it is very old just from the way it was used.

Pic 2 shows the depression made into the face of the artifact where the swell of the palm goes. This rock fits your hand like 1/2 a glove.

Pic 3 shows how it was held with the palm in the depression. The bit goes from about 7 o'clock to about 4 o'clock in this pic.

Pic 4 shows where the fingers are placed and the index finger is raised to show the depressions that were made for the fingers. It shows some of the sharpened bit as well.

Pic 5 shows the bit end. This was a hand chopper and it is massive compared to any other hand chopper I've ever seen. It is extra thick and you could do some serious animal quartering with this thing.

or...here is an idea...it is a rock that fell from the roof of the cave.

I try to not post questionable artifacts on the site due to if you arent looking at it in person sometimes it will be called a rock. We all have our crude artifacts Im sure. You should see some of the ugly stuff I have found in the creek where I found my big Celt. You would think if they took the time to peck a big Celt they would of taken more care into the points and knifes but it is what it is. Good luck

Did you miss the sentence about the state archaeologist dating it to the Archaic period?

Sorry, I see nothing there that says artifact. I wouldn't put much store in what that state archaeologist said either. That rock would start falling apart if you started using it to chop because of the limestone, florida's limestone is very soft..

good eye.... i would probably have walked over top of it . and i bet we do often

No disrespect guys, but I'm familiar with both the indigenous rocks in FL as well as artifacts. If you guys won't believe me or Dr Calvin Jones, I guess some of you aren't as well versed on artifacts as you think you are. FYI, Americus really liked it.

One of the reasons Calvin Jones believed it was a relic was because of the limestone implements found in the Lake Jackson Mounds, as well as tools found at the Tom Brown Park site. Limestone is indigenous to the area and so it makes perfect sense that Indians would have utilized it.
I understand how some people may take "state archaeologist" as a negative, but most don't understand that Calvin was completely hands-on. We worked side-by-side with him on many different occasions. He was one to get muddy right next to you. There are very few left who go out in the field anymore, other than to supervise. The money has dried up, unless you find something new like the Clovis at Page-Ladson last year that made national news.
