Faux antique pen?

I found this off an old trail today. It is stamped with the brand name "Pal" and looks to be a pen, twenties style.

I thought it was silver, but no hallmark was found. All I could read was a faint, Made in the U.S.A, the "PAL" logo, and a Pat. number or something.

Searching for the company on google almost made my head explode, as "Pen" and "Pal" all lead to something else. Do you know this brand?

Nice find I believe it is a mechanical pencil - I found this on eBay - Ad from 1921.
