It is a bittersweet story with a happy twist. We had adopted a terrier about a month ago. The dog was great for the first few days, but then became ill. He had a high fever and did not respond to antibiotics. His condition worsened even after changing to different meds. It finally got to the point where I had to carry him to the vet. The Dr. had no idea what was wrong, and understood the financial burden it would be on me, especially due to the fact that we only had it for a week. He offered to take the dog so he could try to treat it, so I turned the poor animal over to him.

I began searching for a new dog almost immediately, going to all the area shelters nearbye, with no luck finding the "perfect" pet. Then something amazing happened!

I took the entire family to a shelter more than an hour away from my home today. Again we did not see a suitable pet. I was on my way out the door, when I noticed a man holding an adorable puppy. When I inquired at the desk, I was told that man was surrendering the dog and it would have to be held for a week for evaluation, with no waiting list. I would have to take my chances and try in a week. The man surrendering the dog glanced over at me. I went outside to wait, so I could ask the man if the dog was worth coming back for, or if it had issues. About a minute went by and the man came out and asked if i was interested in the dog, a 12 week old Shi-Poo (Shi-tzu-Poodle). We told him it was exactly what we were looking for, and he went inside and told the shelter he had changed his mind and no longer wished to surrender the dog. He had us follow us to his home where he gave us the puppy, the accessories and vet info. He was so happy he did not have to put the dog in a shelter, as his wife had wanted, and we are ecstatic about our newest family member, Winnie. It was meant to be that we both showed up at the shelter at the same time!

Adendum: We got a call today from the Vet regarding our first dog, Cooper. He is going to be fine! He has a rare tic borne ailment and needs daily treatments. They are placing him in a home which is with an owner experienced with special needs pets.

Neil,

That is great news for everyone (you get a new dog, Winnie gets a new home, and Cooper will be okay). That is what I call one lucky day. Go may a PowerBall ticket while you are still lucky.

Aww, a sweet little pup. Winnie wins our hearts.

;) RR
