Found this detecting on my father in laws land ! Not sure what it is, Crude Pitch Fork !?!? Any ideas ? ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1463967311.261821.jpg

At first glance I thought it was tongs - for handling a very hot object. Then took a closer look...no hinged area.

Is definitely a custom handmade item. If this was found in a northern locale and your father-in-law (or ??) liked to go ice fishing, maybe something for chipping the edges of a hole without having to chip the whole thing? I doubt it's a pitch fork. That would be too heavy, IMO. It also could have been used for a stake or marker.

Has your father-in-law had any ideas??

Welcome to TNET!
On the lighter side, It looks like a hand made, heavy duty wiener roaster.

Have the two forks been hammered flat or are they still round stock?

I think that it may be a special made tool used for picking up a small smelting pot when it's hot. Smelting pots were used to melt lead (and other metal objects) and poured into a mold for things such as fishing sinkers. When removed from the fire/heat a similar tool was used. Just my opinion.

It was found in Central Ma., no lake nearby for ice fishing but I suppose they could have traveled to the the lake with the same way I do with my gear

That is what I think also.

I'd use it to flip logs over in the fireplace. Kind of a one off home made device I'm thinking ??

Yeah, looks like a log turner to me too, used in large open fireplaces or Inglenooks to move and turn logs.

Dicejr1967- What is the actual length?
