Looks like a buckle blank.

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not sure what that is. but if I were to guess, wouldn't a buckle blank be blank?

I think it is a belt plate like Mrs. O suggested..... with a missing gemstone or cameo ....something was hooked into those little wedges

I love this. A thread within a thread. Actually I used to live near Glouster over 40 years ago- did a lot of detecting in SE Ohio.
By the way the Shawnee silver mine does not exist. Even though silver mines are listed in historical county references they are bogus. The legends probably started when folks found galena(lead sufide- not native to Ohio) around burial mounds.

I apologize to Madmardigan as we being silly here.

Good question about a buckle blank - there are all different sorts - they have ones that are just plain, they have ones where they are plain, but give you an area to add coins, etc. (soldered). There are also the kinds that can have a "fancy" look, leaving holes for inserting gems, or ornaments in them, or to add prongs to add stones of any sort, or pictures or whatever.

ah I see it now. Thanks for the lesson :)

judging by how all the prongs on this one have not been punched out, I think its safe to say this one must have been a blank
