Looks like some kind of Roman Fitment to me. Not had one like it though, so its a guess. Definitely Roman.

Hi there, many thanks for your reply. Seems to be a tough one as no one can relly tell me what this is.

It's probably a Roman Military fitting, that slotted on leather. Thats the direction you should take.

I have to disagree with you. Not because i know it better, just because i had several of these fittings recorded by the archies as medieval fittings. :dontknow:
I can say that some of them come from fields with roman sites, some with no relationship to roman sites and none directly off a roman site.

No worries, happy to be wrong. That would explain why I've never seen one in my Roman books etc. If Medieval then its still probably a type of Sword Belt Fitment.

There are different styles. Most common are the ones with ring in both directions. There are others with some kind of hook with a knob on it's end. This knob is broken off on most of them. I think i have one with the knob still on. I made pics of the ones i had handy.

Most of those are fitments that either went on the belt or scabbard to hold the sword in place. Just never seen the clip version in the UK.

My thought too. Never got more info on them as "medieval belt fitting" by the archies.
You remember my Saxon Stirrup mount? I turned it in together with the info you send me and all i got back was: Copper alloy mount, medieval. :BangHead:

Either lazy or stupid.

Overworked and understaffed.
It's much better now with own experts in (roman)coins, medieval and prehistoric artefacts and staff for cleaning/recording.
