This thing just had me wondering why the base has fancy but the top bulb part is so plain and attached by a cotter pin. Found on an old home site. I guess if it was all shiny copper it wouldn't look so bad. What it be?

It almost looks like a bell. Can you see any likelihood it could have functioned as such, with an external striker... a bit like an alarm or clock bell?

Thank you. I thought bell also but nothing internal. I put it in trash.

If you have the space for storage , metal = money, scrap yards by it all. brass and copper pay well. lead pays pretty good too.steel and iron pay the least.
I took a bucket of mixed brass bits, and got $21 for it. not much but it bought a nice lunch and some beers..

Snowdigger maybe onto something with bridle tack or saddle decoration.
It may also be a rosette, there seems to be evidence of lead on the back? :icon_scratch:

I've had a chance to sleep on this and I'm now thinking this is likely a horse 'blinder rosette'. :icon_scratch:

"Horse blinders are firm leather squares or plastic cups that attach to a horse's bridle or hood and prevent a horse from seeing behind and beside him.
Horses that pull wagons and carriages wear blinkers to prevent them from becoming distracted or panicked by what they see behind the wagon."

These were attached by a piece of wire to a flap of thick leather, which was then sewn to the horses halter.
You can see see from a close-up in the pics you posted that some of the decorative 'silver wash' is still remaining on your find.

Here's a pic of a brass over lead 'blinder rosette' that I found a few years ago.

Thanks very much ticndig.
It was only after having found the 'heart' blinder rosette, that I did some research on these types of rosettes.

Hope you're having a mild winter in PA, we have 6" - 8" of snow on the way here today. :sadsmiley:

The rosette with the heart is very nice , I'm in Cumberland Va , a few miles from the center of the state . Very mild here for the most part , so mild spring flowers are ready to bloom. not one flake of snow yet.

I've found a couple of these heart rosettes over the years, I'll post a pic of another one below.
I'm fairly certain the one below is a halter rosette, as opposed to a blinder rosette because it has three metal attachment points.

You're fortunate to be having such a mild winter, we were too up until a week ago when the temps finally started to dip.
This morning it's a tad chilly +7F, but with the wind it's -11F. The forecast this week is for temps to get above the freezing mark. :laughing7:

I'm setting up for The Canadian Concrete Show in Toronto today and tomorrow, so the milder weather will be a blessing.

Best of luck to you,
Dave
