Fancy Large Compact?

I found this about 5 inches down where a late 1800's house used to stand. It is four inches in diameter and is copper/brass. It looks like it might have been in a fire. No marks on it anywhere, but the top is very fancily engraved.
Any ID help would be appreciated.
