Got a roll of halves at a bank and pulled them out in the car and thought I had a solid roll of silver. They didn't sound like silver. All of them were bicentennial halves that were dipped in silver ,after a sound test I wanted to cry. What a cruel joke.

Do they have an S mint mark, and have you weighed them?

They haven't necessarily been"dipped" in silver. Probably plated. Mint mark is important though.

yep that is sickening, I will say this though, it appears that those are much different than any paint job I have ever seen. The look very very real.

Sorry about that man, that sucks.

those aren't dipped, probably plated.

The reeding gets all messed up when they dip + the surfaces look "fatter"

win some lose some :-) put em back in the roll and drop em off at another bank .... keep the joke going~! :-D

I got 3 gold ones in my last box. There are some lonely people out there :tongue3:

I have encountered two coins like this, what is the deal with plating? Technique for a cheap scam.. or are people just that weird/bored?

This is absolutely cruel. I would dust them for prints, find the little bastard, and blow his house up. Joking...

But in all honesty, I would raise hell. :headbang:

There were a lot of coins like that advertised in magazines. Plated Bicentennials were all the rage back then, my favorite is in an old dealer price list my grandpa had from 1977, that said "BICENTENNIAL QUARTERS NEVER TO BE MINTED AGAIN: One Uncirculated Roll $15" and then listed the prices for other coins, like $1 Standing Liberties, $.50 Barber Dimes, $2 Walking Liberty halves, etc.

meanest thing i've ever heard of

I am finding these more often. Plated coins were sold as parts of sets years ago. Kinda like the plated junk that is sold on TV today. People saved them and over time they sat in collections. When the going gets tough, those that think they are real silver will try to sell them only to discover that they are plated. They then place them in rolls either a few at a time or like in the case here, a roll at a time.

As mentioned, check the coins for the S mintmark just in case.

I have also seen these dated 1972 D and 1974 D. They are not errors struck in silver as the weight is the same as it would be for a copper-nickel clad piece. The plating is usually only .003 in thick so it doesn't add any substantial weight to the coin.

Have Fun,
Bill

I actually just got one of these fake bicentennials in a box last night. That same box also produced a real one so I wasn't completely upset. ;D
