Wow.
I will wait for coin guys to weigh in on this...

Ron Guth: 1776 was a momentous year for the thirteen American Colonies. On July 4 of that year, delegates to the Continental Congress signed a Declaration of Independence, sending notice to England and the rest of the world that the Colonies would submit no longer to outside governance and interference. In recognition of the solidarity of the Colonies and their assumption of the right as a sovereign entity to coin their own monies, plans were made to issue a Silver Dollar. Patterns, using designs provided by Benjamin Franklin, were struck in Pewter, Brass, and Silver.
The denticles below the date on some of the "CURRENCY" varieties (and perhaps others) show a curious "shearing" effect where they are only partially attached to the coin (for example, see Superior Galleries 5/2001:1009). Sometimes the loose segments will actually shift out of position, creating the impression that a drunken engraver created the die.

If this is a real coin...

Heh...

worn: $7,000 US dollars catalog value
average circulated: $21,000
well preserved: $50,000 and more

And an absolute banner.
I will prolly even still vote a banner even if it a fake just for the simple fact it looks so good :P

P.S>
DO NOT CLEAN THIS COIN.
Do not handle it unprotected.

May have to take a drive in person to a dealer of serious reputation on this.
Don't send... And if you have to... insure.
I would contact the larger dealers who have sold this type of coin.

IF... I REAPEAT... " IF "....
This coin is good...
Sky is the limit on this at auction IMO...
Those prices above reflect only PAST sales.
NOT what that coin could bring today...
Which I would be POSITIVE when I say that this could FAR EXCEED those values.

Holy Christ! Wow. I'm no coin expert but I eyeballed it against the red book and it looks ok. There were replicas made so I say this; be careful, don't touch it, and have a professional clean it. Have it authenticated and you may have a coin of a lifetime. Dang man, it takes a lot to wow me and your find made my night!

Is it pewter?

I see a couple minor differences from this "real" Fugio dollar; but yours is pretty darned close. Certainly worth having appraised.

If you compare where the letters are in relation to the rays and lines of the sundial and the bar below it yours is within reasonability to be just a second die rather than a fake. There are several varities.

One thing I do spot is the third "N" in CONTINENTAL - the left vertical centers the sun. Yours is off to the edge of the sun. And the right upright "N" in your CURENCY doesn't like up like the "real" example. Of such little things - and exact weight and dimensions - are determinations made.

I purchased one in a lot of tokens. It was clearly cast, with edge markings indicating such.Look at the rim and edge for any indications of a cast token.

If it's a fake its a very old fake with the legitimate-looking wear and even pitting on the reverse. My money is on real, good luck!

I would hope it's real but I have my doubts. It looks cast to me. For just as long as they have been making coins, they have also been faking coins. This particular coin being one of the most reproduced. Plenty of fake "dug" coins.

Bottom Line
Do not clean - period
Roll the dice and spend the money to have it authenticated
Think of it as spending the money on a scratch ticket - lets see if you win
make the investment an see if you have a winner

Keep us updated. If it's real, WOW. You said "found" this coin. Does that mean dug?

What I find hard to understand on here is that when you guys dig a coin don't you assume who would bury a fake coin? Is it really that common out East to dig coins in old regions that actually are fakes? Just asking not trying to be rude. Might I also add amazing coin!
