F5 Settings

I have an F70, and I'm also new to detecting. I'm not the best to give advice, but I asked the same question a few days ago.

The answer I was given...'it depends'. What type of ground are you searching? Amount of minerals, trash, coil type and experience level? It's not a direct answer, but the correct answer. My settings reflect the reality of location and ability.

I have only hunted trash filled urban parks. I have an 11"DD and a detector (F70) that exceeds my ability. I use delta tones, because I want to learn sound feed back. For the most part, I stick with an all metal setting. I have my SENC and THRESH dialed back a bit. I get a butt-load of audio feedback, but skip big trash. I have slowed down my sweep and spend more time identifying targets.

I don't know if my advise is correct, but it's working for me. Press your buttons accordingly. Best of luck!

I know realise; I have spent most of my life doing neither what I ought, nor what I liked.

Hey TS, depends where you hunt mostly, parks, yards, woods, old homesteds or fields. Run gain as high as stable. Run thres pos to hear small stuff. Run disc as low as possible and digg every repeatable sig. If in a field I run G-80,T-+3,D-18. Hope this helps and good luck. HH

I run at threshold at 0, Gain at 75 and disc at min. (All adjustable if needed for circumstances). Fishstick mentioned an important thing I noticed with the f5, dig the repeatable signals. This unit , I am seeing can be noisy but, when the signals repeat on a good tone, ahhhhhhh treasure.

And I agree with the others above, optimal settings, depends on area and conditions, things change so much in the ground I hunt and the F5 has no trouble complaining to me about it.

Last week I found a tiny little kid's gold ring in a tot lot--the F5 read it at 18-19 in the sand (21 air test). I've been running discrimination at 17 most of the time but I think it would be better to go to 15 or even 12 on the basis that no matter how small the ring, there's something smaller out there.
