Dad was busy, so I took an opportunity to try a field I've been meaning to do. Its a classic looking spot on a hill, not far from a Roman Road, & the Archies had it down as possible Roman, based on the cropmark below.
Land-Mag had spent the last two days field walking it & other nearby fields with near zero pottery results. However, it still seemed worthy of running a couple of detectors across it & thats what we did for 2.5 hours with the less than intersting result;

However, its one less to worry about!

Cropmarks look a little odd.... Is the roman road marked in the upper right? Anyways, you gave it a try and you never know.

No, thats just a square around the site. The road is not visible, but its towards the bottom of the picture.

I just thought it was very close if it was the road. :occasion14:

Our thoughts are, thats its pre-Roman, as the road goes though the site on a different alignment.

That is wild with the crop marks. Do you often see these on your sites? I would have been excited just seeing that. I often search for charcoal or darker areas in ploughed fields for ancient habitation. Maybe the finds are deeper than what the detector will do?

You know the drill Cru. Check 'em out and then cross off the list and move on. At least you didn't get totally skunked.

I find most of my sites this way, but not all.

Darker soil on different timelines is another good sign I look out for. The finds are not deeper as its on a hill, slope & ploughed; no pottery, no lead, no nails, no coins=no site from the late Iron Age onwards.:icon_thumright:

Yeap, its a '?' resolved.
