Explorer XS question (newbie here...)

Hi! I just bought my first Minelab detector, an used Explorer XS. It looks in good cosmetic condition and seems to work good except one thing that maybe is normal or maybe not. The threshold sound is fine when I turn the detector on, but after some time detecting it becomes like a broken sound, not an stable "hum". All the other sounds (detection sounds are ok.) Any ideas, it is normal, is there a setting that I need to adjust to avoid this? Or it is faulty? I am a complete newbie with this machine, not to metal detection. I'm unly using quickstart by the moment. Thanks!

Does the XS have the pitchhold option? If so, could that be it? If it keeps up and everything else is fine, turn the thresh volume all the way down and hunt in "silent" mode...just an idea. Perhaps it is discing out iron but the sens is too high and iron is coming through?

I've never used an XS so I'm not sure to be honest, but hope you get it figured!

IronPatch, any thoughts on this...?

I suspect that under your coil is iron and that is why threshold stops sound. try it with nail. threshold is made to hear what you miss or discriminate when is stops sound- under coil is something that you discriminate.

Did you read anything about the detector? ;D It's called a null.

Or you have something metal too close to your coil... mine was doing that yesterday at the beach, because my sand scoop was about 3 feet above the coil (in my left hand) on my left swing. The thing is strong when it comes to picking stuff up. Anyway, when it occasionally picked up my scoop it would break the hum and give a high pitch noise like silver, but not repeatable. lol Go figure... ::)

That's what I thought too, but he answered me on another forum yesterday with this statement:

"No, it is not null. When nulling, the "dirty" threshold sound quits and detector is silent.
If I change channels, sound is fine for some seconds, then it brokens again.

I can only hear a clean threshold sound when coil is lifted 3 or 4 feet from the ground.

All the other sounds (flute sounds) look noormal. Coins sound nicely. Only problem is the threshold...

Thanks!"

It sounds like his detector is falsing on the ground...highly mineralized soil or lots of rusty iron....just reduce the sensitivity and see if the falsing goes away.....you gotta live with a little falsing to get the good stuff when you're in mineralized ground or areas with lots of iron. It takes lots of hunting time to get comfortable with this.

That would be pretty bad ground but sounds like it could be the case. Was thinking headphone jack or headphones but I think the raising the coil statement elimineted that. I would definitely try a factory reset because weird things can happen!

Maybe clean your coil cover out as well... if you have one.
I saw another guy not that long ago who had no idea he even had a coil cover until he bought one and tried to put it on.
Stuff can build up in there and make your coil act up.
Might even be a break in your coil wire as well... :dontknow:

Hi, everyone, I'm glad to inform you that detector is perfect. I was doing a couple of things wrong.
Thanks to all for your help!

Perhaps you could add what was being done wrong so others might learn from it...anyhow, good to see it sorted out

Yes, RigDean, you are right, I should have posted that!
First, I was doing the noise cancel with the coil very far to the ground, and second, I had the sensibility way too high. I just panicked without reason before learning more about this machine. My fault! Thanks.

The noise cancel thing wouldn't have mattered, but the sens. too high when you're not used to it would definitely be a challenge. I too did the 100 miles an hour approach when I got mine and also had to take a step back and reflect on what was going on. (Was very frustrated) It's very good news the detector is ok.
