I have been mding for years now and I have always hoped to someday be able to afford a top of the line machine. Last year I purchased an explorer! I love it and I can finally go coin hunting without always feeling like I am missing deeper coins. Last fall my jerk little brother outdid me and bought an E-TRAC. No problem, the only difference is you can plug the E-TRAC into your pc right? WRONG!!! It goes deeper, the target ID numbers dont fluctuate, and pinpointing is far better. Wishing I had spent a little more money for a significantly better machine.

THe option for those who don't want to spend to much money is to get the Explorer II and dump the stock coil for an SEF. Got a feeling it was someone on this forum who did an extensive test Explorer v E-Trac and demonstrated that there was more overlap of good and bad targets with the E-Trac.

I have spent countless hours with both an Explorer SE and the E-Trac. In my opinion, the explorer se gave me a better audio ID coupled with the X Y plot target gives me the ability to accurately ID most targets. I can easily tell an Indian Head penny from a zinc and in most cases a deep wheatie from a memorial, a silver dime from a clad, etc.

The E-Trac was awesome but with the new algorithm used to bunch all desirable targets on the same line, I don't get the ID I do from the explorer. I actually sold them both to buy an Explorer II. I prefer to hunt for deep silver. I feel that the very simple circuitry of the E-II gives me a little better depth and less falling on iron.

Best of luck, happy hunting.

I believe it depends on the area/conditions you 're hunting in. I base this on the fact I see people claim the SE was just as good and my experience was the SE was nowhere close to the E-Trac in depth and ID ability.

The Minelab E-Trac | Big Boys Hobbies is not deeper but is a bit easier for some to use. My explorer will hit dimes just as deep as my E-Trac. I do love the auto sensitivity of the E-Trac.
