Yes. most accounts I've heard from experienced users the slimline sucks and Minelab seems to agree by releasing the pro coil even before they started selling it with the SE as the SE pro. No more slimline coils being made, that's a good enough hint right there.

Yep, I give the SE slimline coil two thumbs down!! It's too noisy in higher mineralized ground, and is not as deep as the coils I'm about to mention....You're better off with the Pro coil or comparable SEF coil. Even the older Explorer II/Quattro 1050 coil, if you can find one, will be a big improvement. Some of the diehards still prefer the 1050 coil, but may be difficult to find (ML is not making them anymore), so probably a new coil purchase will be your best bet.

I'm one that definitely prefers the 1050 and can you believe my luck.... I found two brand new white ones for sale last year. I paid about a $100 each, but to me that was a steal and I offered quick to get the deal done.

I went from the 1050 coil to the Pro coil on my EXP II. The mounting point on the pro coil is centered making it better balanced. I definitely think, in general, the Pro coil in quieter then my original 1050. One note, the coil cover on the Pro coil seems to pick up sand, so I try to remember to empty it when detecting in sandy soil. I found this out the hard way after it drove me crazy after I took it to the beach the first time. I got black sand in it had only rinsed it with the cover left on. Won,t make that mistake again.

Thanks for the input, guys. Your replies have made my decision an easy one.

I have Explorer II 1000 coil on my machine. Should I upgrade to 1050 or Pro coil? Thanks.

I have also have a used slimline just sitting around.

The Slimline was really poor so I upgraded to the Pro coil.

I highly recommend the Pro coil.
- It is lighter.
- It pinpoints better.
- It gives better target ID. You get a lot less iffy signals.
- It gives better target seperation.
- You can crank up the sensitivity.
- And best of all, it does not false alarm every time you hit it on a rock (or tall grass).

I also use an 8X6 SEF coil as my smaller coil. The SEF coils are also very good.

thanks for the details, Fred. They must be good because they're on back-order everywhere. I've heard nothing but good things regarding the SEF coil, especially the 8x6. How is pinpointing with the SEF? MB
