Looks like it might be a chalcedony nodule. Can you see light through it?

A freshly exposed area would help. Chip off a bit with a hammer, use eye protection! Quartz often has a glassy to greasy appearance.

Appears to be a fine quartz/ chalcedony nodule. If you cut it then it may exhibit banding like agate but I suspect it would have a grainy appearance. I have found lots of that type of rock and find them neat because of the shapes ;) The dark bit in the chip photo is smoky quartz crystal.
