Natman--this token is one of the series called "St. Louis Part-Incuse" tokens. The manufacturer, the Excelsior Stencil Works of St. Louis, operated out of several addresses over the years, but was at 312 Olive St. from 1900-1913. This is from an article by Bruce Smith in the Journal of the Token and Medal Society of Feb 2003 which can be read online with a little searching. The company sold tokens to many customers around the country, but the majority of them were within a few hundred miles of St. Louis, so the search for H. Hildebrand should be concentrated in your area. I will do some more looking as time permits. I tried looking on tokencatalog.com, but the site appears to be down right now - hopefully it will be back with us shortly. With your permission, I would post your token there so more eyes will see it.

Natman--I assume you just gave the okay to post it on tokencatalog??? Also, I see that there was a Harry J. Hildebrand who was a bartender in St. Louis ca. 1915-18. There are a lot of others with that initial and name, but so far I haven't seen either the Harry Hildenbrand or any others as "proprietor" of a token-using business.

Thanks that would be great!

1916 & 1917 St. Louis City Directories. I sent the info Larry P. put on tokencatalog to the MO token cataloger to get his opinion. The 1906 date lines up better with the date of the Excelsior reverse.
