EXCALIBUR QUESTION

I HAVE HAD MY EXCALIBUR 1000 FOR A LITTLE LESS THAN A YEAR AND HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED WITH IT. THIS PAST SUMMER I FOUND SEVERAL VERY NICE RINGS. HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY I AM NOT FINDING ANY GOLD OR SILVER CHAINS. I HAVE SET THE DETECTOR JUST LIKE IT WAS RECOMMENDED ON THIS FORUM. I SET THE DISCRIMINATION ON 1, THRESHOLD WHERE YOU CAN JUST HEAR IT, VOLUME WIDE OPEN, SENSITIVITY IN 11 OR 12 O'CLOCK POSITION.
ARE THERE OTHER SETTINGS I SHOULD BE USING OR AM I JUST NOT HEARING THE SIGNALS THAT CHAINS GIVE. DO CHAINS GIVE A BROKEN SIGNAL?
THIS IS MY SECOND TIME POSTING AND I APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP I CAN GET, THANK YOU ALL FOR THE INFORMATION YOU GIVE.

I know that the ..Ex. and the Sov. are not good at finding thin gold chains i was told that by the dealer i got mine from . And i think he was right from my use of them they do not like thin chains........................................==Jim==

When the Excal sees a chain, it sees it as an individual link in the chain. It doesn't pick it up in mass. Dont know why but that's how it was explained to me. You know how pretty darn small some of those gold chains can be....

Most detectors have trouble with thin gold chains. Silver being more conductive sound off better. My Excal's both have trouble with these thin chains, but they will respond to a earring back. The only detector that I know of that will respond to these thin chains are some Tesoro's or true gold nugget detectors. Course these also respond well to bird shot and hot rocks.

To truely learn what the detector is doing is to lay down some targets, gold chains and junk items and see how they respond.

back during the summer i DID find a gold rope chain with a small charm with my Excal.....it wasnt giving a very good signal...kinda broken.....sounded like maybe a piece of a pull tab.....but i was just a little over belly deep in the water and there werent any waves so i scooped it....i nearly passed out when i saw what was in there.......now i dont know if the chain was kinda balled up or if it picked up the charm...but like i said it wasnt a real good signal.....so depending on your situation (water depth, wave action, dirt or sand floor)....... try to dig any signal you encounter...you may be surprised.

The first time I used my Excal I found these 2 chains. I have never found chains again. Don't know what I did differently or if it was just luck. Both were found in freshwater.

I think a lot depends on how the chain falls to the sea bed and if it presents itself as a mass signal or thin line. I have found 6 silver chains this past year and only one really good gold link chain, some of these have been very iffy signals. I always tend to centre on the signal and turn at right angles to it to recheck and see if it improves, likewise I always dig, have faith in your Excalibur it will do the business.

A good new year to you all and may the surf god smile as max says.

Regards Rob

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE GIVEN ME. I WILL LAY DOWN SOME ITEMS AND SEE HOW THEY SOUND. IF I'LL KEEP SWINGING THE COIL THE FINDS WILL COME.

I have used the Excaliber since it had the Sea search coil and I will tell you that the older Xcals did find gold chains better than todays newer ones, If you want chains you have to get a Tigershark(Tesoro) you will not get as much depth as the Xcal but you will be looking for recent drops anyway, There's lots of other gold out there anyway. :)

i forgot to mention mine is the older one that has the seasearch coil....it is before the 800/1000s came out.....has 8" seasearch that actually LOOKS like a double D
