The Xcal is a great machine in the water..... thats where it shines. Will it work in other locations..... just like any detector it does what it does. Is it always the best for a give location NO. Its designed to be simple so it doesnt have the tweaking ability and it has a slow recovery which in the water isnt a big deal since you are forced to move slower anyway and there are fewer targets. There are detectors better suited for the sand, woods, or trashy areas. Its not a multi purpose machine no where close to the ET out of the water. It does do a good job anywhere on the beach..... i say good job. It does a good enough job that if im water hunting and decide to sand hunt i dont walk back just to get my SE.

It will work great in dry beach sand and it will work fine on dry land, but like dew said you have to go slower on dry land due to the slow sweep response....Look at it this way detectors are like golf clubs, you can putt with a driver, but do you really want to or are you better off buying a putter.... Diffferent detectors perfor better under certain conditions and less under other conditions....

So considering all this. If I'm going to buy ONE. The CTX 3030, with three year warranty might be the best one to get? Or... is really THAT big of deal? Can the 3030 be that much stronger? The Excal goes pretty deep! But on the beach, the 3030 is the ticket for sure, over the Excal?

You can get an Excal and E Trac for the price of the 3030.

Why is it that many prefer the lesser scanning 17 frequencies of the Sovereign GT, over the great frequencies of say the Safari, E-Trac, Explorer? The Safari cost less, but the E-Trac more. The compooter hook-up with ET is no big deal to me. Why do so many like the Sovereign so much?

Many seem to have, to like the SOV GT, over the E-Trac. Workhorse good? They like the strength better. The lesser 17 scanning frequencies is better for the salty dry sand search, and it goes deeper? Just a good simply to use detector. Doesn't seem many have problems to have to send away for repairs. Don't hear about many problems with it like some of the other land detectors.

I have to disagree with some of the other posts. In my opinion the Excalibur is a great all around detector. It's basically a waterproof Sovereign. The Sovereign was considered a great detector before the the FBS series came out. The Sovereign and the Excalibur are still better machines than most of what the competition has to offer. If you get an Excalibur and want to use it on dry sand too then get it with a 10" coil. The 10" coil may not be the best for coin hunting in parks or lawns but you will appreciate the coverage when beach hunting. If you get more involved in land detecting then you will probably want to get something with more sophisticated discrimination and interchangeable coils like the E-Trac or 3030.

I don't have a lot of experience (two weeks with the excal) but for grins today I checked the dry sand with my excal and new garret pro pointer(fathers day gift) and found the same amount of clad in dry sand as in the water. Only 52 cents total but still fun for a few hours on the beach. Also found an old metal beach fence post about 8-10 inches deep so it has depth.

Not as fancy as e-trac, but still finds stuff

AS posted you can use an excal in dry sand. In fact that is a popular use. Mnay water hunters will also hunt dry sand if given enough reason to go for it. AS for dirt hunting there are machines better suited to the purpose. Kinda like, you can jog in hikng boots but why would you?

The excal is completely hardwired out of the box reducing its flexibility. It also comes with a shaft that many if most hunters switch out to attain better balance.

The SOV GT is simplicity in a box. Mostly it's a set and forget type of machine that can hunt anywhere. The machine is highly customizable. You can swap out headsets and coils as hunting conditions dictate and you can remove the control box from the shaft and wear it on your hip or even around your neck in a purpose made cover. The GT's popularity is driven by its success rate and durability. Unless you are going to be hunting in water deep enough to submerse the entire machine, the GT is usually the better choice. Nothing beats real world proven results.
