Hi,

So, after all the great suggestions on what would work for me best on the wet sand and in the water, I had to bite the bullet. I bought the Excalibur 1000 last Fri. and LOVE it.
I am now finding more clad easily and still learning the ropes.
What I am wondering is - when MD at low tide in the pools of water with rippled sand (seems to me a good place to look for jewelry/ gold) what is the most common setting used for a newbie?
When I was first using it in the water I had noises that were constantly changing, no normal hum. So I stayed out the water after many attempts. Then I tried again but, switched to pinpoint and I didn't have all the noise and found a few fishing items which is a start.
So what works in the water for you, what numbers? (and of course I really want to find some jewelry and gold)

Mine are set at:
discriminate - 1
sensitivity- 10
pinpoint - when in water

I know I have a lot to learn and any help is appreciated!

THANKS!!!

Everyone is going to come up with different settings that work for them at the beach they are detecting, but not work elsewhere.

I suggest you set it in Disc instead of Pinpoint which it really All Metal and defeats the great use of the Iron mask.
Sensitivity in Auto if you are getting changing sounds without the humm. When you get really comfortable with the Excal you can up the Sensitivity off Auto. Remember that knob decreases Sens. the farther clock wise you turn it instead of like other detectors. If you are still getting to many strange sounds you can turn the Sens more to 1 or 2 o'clock. Some areas you can run higher some you can't.

Volume all the way up. You can cover the drain holes with duct tape to block out surf noises too if your not going diving with it.

Disc control a 1.

I set mine the following way,

Sensitivity I set to where it is stable, it varies depending on which beach and the conditions of the beach but usually anywhere between 10 and 3 o'clock if you look at the dial as a clock. Don't be afraid to adjust it down to make it stable, I have dug targets over 14-15 inches with it on the 3 o'clock position. I will adjust mine till it is stable, then move it back just a little counter clock wise (make it hotter).. The main point is it needs to be stable......

I never move the disc above the min setting of 1......

Volume is maxed out, when I find a target I want it to scream "dig me, I'm gold"

Threshold is set to where it is like a tiny mosquito in my ear, I can hear it, but not real loud.

I do hunt in the pinpoint mode at times, it seems to go deeper. When i get a signal, I switch to disc, to see if it nulls out.......I also changed knobs to larger scalloped knobs, so switching between pinpoint and disc is easy. I would suggest till you learn the excal to search in disc...........

Pinpointing on the Excal is relative easy, without switching to pinpoint. When you find a target, move the coil slowly towards the target, when you first get the signal it is at the front (toe of the coil), works the same if you move the coil back, when you first get the signal, it is then on the back of the coil (heel). I also have great luck with just "X" the target, swinging N to S, then E to W....

If you don't have one, get a straight shaft, it makes all the difference in the world when hunting for hours, also pick up the shoulder harness with bungee, it is well worth the small investment of $20+ dollars. It will allow you to let go of the Excal in the surf and it hangs right by you side, controls up. It also takes all most all the weight off off of your arm, you just guide it.

I have never seen a null be anything but iron, and I dug a lot of nulls when I first started to see, I also dug nulls when I was bored and targets were few and far between...

Where in Florida did you move to......?

Thank you both for your help, I really appreciate it. I can't wait to get out there again and start looking with the new settings to try out.
My husband and I moved to St Augustine about 2 yrs ago. I have wanted to do MD so with all the help on here, I think we got a great one for what I want to do now.

We have a lot of rain today, so I may not make it out.

Thanks Again!!!!
