Hello everyone, I’m in Jamaica for 12 days, still have 3 left and have been detecting the swim areas at several beaches, I’ve found 10 rings so far ( 5 of them gold!). I will do a post when all is said and done, unfortunately maybe I’m already done, please read below.

Today, I noticed that there are exposed wires to my headset cable where it inserts into the body, I don’t know how long it’s been like this and I don’t know what to do to fix it. I’ve been submerging the detector fully as I’ve been hunting anywhere from 2-6ft in depth. I’d like to keep hunting but don’t know what damage it will do. I’ve had this detector for around 10 years now and think it’s around 15 years old as I bought it used from a member here. I only get to use it 1-2x/year as I’m busy building my colorectal surgery practice in DFW.

To me that looks like a non-problem. It looks like it's just the outer casing that's damaged. Just wrap it in waterproof electrical tape and keep going. I doubt getting it wet is going to hurt it, because you probably already have. (The wire has probably been like that for a while and it just got bad enough to notice.). But I'd still try to tape it up.

It is a common problem on that model....the casing on the wire tends to disintegrate around that ten year mark. I think mine went at about 7 year mark. I would tape it up, and finish my trip....especially with 5 golds in the pocket already. When you get home you can send it in for repairs. Maybe you get 3 or 4 more golds, and decide to buy a new machine. The rest of your wiring will quickly degrade once it starts to go, so im pretty sure you'll have to do something when you get home. Good luck, and I can't wait to see your post up !! Congrats!!

Thank you both for your replies! Yes I will try to see if the dive shop has any electrical tape, I didn’t do anything today any more stressful to the detector than what I’ve been doing so I think it’s been like this and still seems to be working fine. I will probably get a new detector in the near future, even using 1-2x/year it is a very enjoyable part of my island vacations. Some of the gold I found this trip has been buried awhile, the chunkiest men’s wedding band even has coral stuck to it all the way around and I’ve had to rub small patches of coral off of multiple gold rings. I left the coral on the large gold ring bc it looks really cool!

I can’t wait to see the rings you found

You can spray it with rubber, plasti-dip works good. Wrap it in waterproof tape, then spray several coats of plasti'dip.

This is just a temporary fix, the cracking cable will continue. It helps to spray the cables with a non-petroleum based silicone spray. McNitt is what I use. It helps preserve the cables on coil and headphones.

has Jamaica changed its laws?
Its supposedly illegal to detect - signs in airport have no detectors allowed under the signs with guns and other items noy allowed by tourists - even locals cant hunt :dontknow:
I had small group of friend go down and had all equipment taken and had to pick up when leaving

I always use Club Mobay when coming into Jamaica, we always fly, I haven’t done any cruises here so not sure if that’s different. The 4 times I’ve been here since 2015 if you use club Mobay which is the guide to get you through customs rapidly my bags have never gone through a scanner, you just keep them with you through customs. I’ll occasionally have to explain going through security in the US or coming back what it is but club Mobay keeps you from getting your bags scanned so I’ve never had an issue with it.
